Health and Sanitation in the Dining Halls

Sanitation in the dining halls is always, and especially now, a priority. Here's what Columbia Dining is doing and how students can help.

March 13, 2020

All Dining staff are trained in sanitation best practices from food preparation, to storage, and cleaning. Staff take part in mandatory education sessions and ongoing refresher sessions on all the steps they must take each day. We are inspected regularly by the New York City Department of Health to ensure these rigorous standards met.

Current and added precautions:

  • Frequent handwashing and glove use is being reinforced to all staff.
  • Serving areas in the dining halls all have glass guards.
  • We have increased our cleaning of high touch surfaces using a disinfectant.
  • Dining staff participated in a COVID-19 education and preventive measures session with Columbia Health administration.
  • Meal service has been changed to all single use paper and individually wrapped utensils and all meals are to-go to help reinforce social distancing.
  • Managers are on the floor at all times helping to reinforce these practices with both staff and students.

A reminder to students:

  • Follow preventative measures like hand washing and use the hand sanitizer that is available at Dining locations.
  • Personal water bottles should not be used in the dining drinking stations, instead use to-go glasses provided by Dining. Personal water bottles can be filled at the stations in the residence halls, kitchens, and other campus locations.

If you are not feeling well, we have a form online where they can request a meal to be packed and picked up by a friend for delivery.

As the situations evolves we will adjust operations accordingly.
